If your student house has started to descend into disorganised chaos, it might be time for a proper deep clean. Living with housemates means that sometimes food gets forgotten in the fridge, and cleaning doesn’t get done.

A thorough spring clean will refresh your living space and make you feel better mentally. Plus, it’s way easier to crush an assignment when you aren’t staring at an overflowing pile of clothes next to your desk.

We’ve put together some popular tips for cleaning your student room and communal spaces!

Our top tips for cleaning your student room

1. Declutter your wardrobe

Your wardrobe is a great place to start when it comes to your spring clean. Sorting through all your clothes isn’t too taxing, and it might be fun – you might even find that cute top you thought was lost forever!

Make three ruthless piles:

  • Keep: The stuff you actually wear. Put it back.

  • Sell/Donate: The clothes you haven’t touched in six months. Stick them on Vinted for extra cash or take them to a charity shop.

  • Store: Thick winter coats or heavy jumpers. Pack them into under-bed storage boxes so they stop hogging valuable rail space.

2. Keep things off the floor

If your wardrobe constantly turns into a ‘floordrobe,’ grabbing some over-the-door hooks might be the perfect solution to keeping your floor neat, tidy, and clothes-free. They’re a lifesaver for towels, hoodies, and jackets you’re too lazy to hang up properly.

3. Vacuum

Once you’ve managed to get all your possessions off the floor, this’ll free up some space to give your student room a good old vacuuming. Remember to pull out any furniture and get right into the corners to remove dust efficiently.

4. Wipe down everything!

Wiping surfaces is a great tip to clean your student room because it will cover so many aspects of it. This counts for your desk, bedside table, cabinets, picture frames, bookshelves, skirting boards, windows, and windowsills. Grab a cloth and a suitable spray – it’s time to get busy!

5. Maximise under-the-bed storage

Not all student rooms have enough storage space, so making the most of the space under your bed is a great tip to keep your student room clean. This is the perfect place to store suitcases, large bags, winter clothes, or other bulky items that you don’t need to get out that often. Invest in some cheap storage containers to keep your under-the-bed storage organised.

6.  Tackle mould

Our next tip for cleaning your student room is to keep an eye out for damp spots around your window frames or corners. Grab a proper mould-destroying spray from the supermarket, spray it, leave it for the exact time on the bottle, and wipe it away. It’s a quick job, but it keeps your room healthy.

Don’t forget – this cleaning tip for student rooms also applies to the wider house (mainly the bathroom). Always open a window whilst having a shower to air it out.

How to keep other student rooms clean

1. Take on the communal fridge

With lots of people sharing the same fridge, sometimes food inevitably gets left or forgotten about, and eventually, it goes off. If your fridge is starting to look and smell a little gross, this should be one of your top priorities for your spring clean.

Get everyone in the kitchen, empty the fridge completely, and bin anything past its use-by date or anything unclaimed. Spray the shelves down with anti-bac, wipe them clean, and then assign everyone their own shelf. It completely stops the “who ate my cheese?” debates and keeps everyone responsible for their own zone.

2.  Tackle the washing-up mountain

No one likes doing the dishes, but unless you’re lucky enough to have a dishwasher, you’ll have to tackle this one like a champion. Try washing up your prep items as you wait for your food to cook – this won’t allow you to wash up everything, but it will cut your post-dinner workload.

If you have stubborn pans, leave them to soak while you eat, but commit to cleaning them before you go to bed. Your housemates will thank you, and it’ll certainly reduce those awkward household arguments!

3.  Wash or replace communal items

Outside of your student bedroom, items that everyone in the house is using could certainly be a bacterial hotspot. So, make sure you’re regularly washing your tea towels, oven gloves, dusting cloths, hand towels, and bath mats, as well as replacing sponges you use to wash up.

4.  Focus on high-traffic areas

If you want your spring clean to have maximum results for minimum effort, split the heavy lifting in these three areas: the kitchen, bathroom, and living room.

Kitchen:

  • Clean out your oven and stovetop.
  • Scrub the microwave (inside and out).
  • Mop the floor.
  • Wipe the kitchen surfaces down as soon as you’ve cooked a meal.

Living room:

  • Disinfect commonly touched items, like light switches and doorknobs.
  • Dust and wipe down all surfaces regularly.
  • Wipe the TV and other electronics.
  • Vacuum the floor.

Bathroom:

  • Use an all-purpose cleaner to wipe down the shower, bath, sink, and mirror.
  • Clean the toilet (and use a toilet brush when needed!).
  • Mop the floor.
  • Tackle grout with bleach and an old toothbrush.
  • Clear the inevitable mountain of hair from the plughole.

To keep your house clean for the rest of the year, why not set up a cleaning rota? This is a simple way to make sure the house doesn’t descend back into chaos as soon as your spring clean is over.

5. Don’t go it alone – get all your housemates involved!

Do not clean the whole house yourself just because you’re tired of the mess. You’ll end up resentful, and your housemates won’t learn a thing.

Put some music on, split the rooms equally, and get stuck in together. Once the house is spotless, order a takeaway or head out for a few drinks to celebrate your achievement. This is a great way to get along.
