Sheffield may not be the most famous city in the UK – however, it has a lot to offer students who are living away from home for the first time. The city is a thriving hotspot with incredible nightlife, a great city centre full of excellent amenities, and a diverse and creative culture. What types of student housing can you choose from, and how much will they cost?

Student halls

If you want to live in student halls on campus, you can expect to pay on average between £3000 and £6000 per year for a 42-week contract. This depends on the area you wish to live in and whether you want a studio or an en-suite.

Shared housing

There are many multiple-bedroom housing/apartment accommodation options available in Sheffield. To live with a larger group of people, you may want to choose a six-bedroom apartment, or possibly a four-bedroom house if you’d rather live with a smaller group. If you’re not sure on who you plan to live with, you may want to look into renting an individual room in an existing house/flat to be shared with others.

You should expect to pay roughly £400 per month for a bedroom in a shared house. This is cheaper than other popular student cities, such as Bristol or Manchester, where you can expect to pay over £500.

Living on your own

You may prefer to have more privacy and live on your own, and this can be a great option if you struggle to study in noisy environments. You can look into a one-bedroom apartment or possibly a two-bedroom option if you want extra space.

It is a lot more expensive to rent a one-bedroom apartment, with rent costing between £150-£200 per person per week. Therefore, opting for a shared house is a great way to save money.

Choosing between a bills-inclusive and non-inclusive rent agreement

The advertised rental price in some student accommodation is inclusive of bills, and some aren’t. When looking at prices, have a look at which bills are factored in, so you’re aware of what will be covered. Looking for a bills-inclusive agreement can often make life easier and avoid conflict about who is paying which bill. Read our guide to bills-inclusive student accommodation in Sheffield here.

If bills are not included, you’ll be paying for these as a whole house/flat, rather than per student. This can often cause more stress and may result in arguments among housemates; however, it is often the cheapest option. Using a bill-splitting service such as Split The Bills can make paying bills much easier.
